Common Skin Conditions In Pugs That You Should Be Aware Of

Be aware that your Pug's wrinkles can become an area where bacteria can build up if you don't clean your pup's wrinkles daily or at least a few times a week. This also depends on how deep your Pug's wrinkles are, but just keep a close watch and work on keeping his skin healthy.

Due to the deep folds in their skin and their susceptibility to skin allergies, pugs need to be monitored closely for any signs of skin discomfort so that they can be treated before any problems escalate.

Common Conditions Seen in Pugs
One of the most common skin conditions that occur in pugs is Skin Fold Pyoderma. One variation occurs on the face of the pug and another can be found in the tail area.

Signs of Skin Fold Pyoderma
* Irritation in the folds of the skin (redness)
* Inflammation of the skin in the folds (swelling)
* A foul odor in between the skin folds

Still another skin problem that is often found in pugs is ringworm. This condition is a fungal infection of the skin that causes a ring-like shaped lesion on the skin, along with hair loss in the affected area.

How to Keep Your Pug's Skin Healthy
Keeping your pug's skin dry is one of the most important steps to keeping the skin folds healthy.

Watch for signs of skin irritation, including scratching, biting or hair loss. These are major clues that your pug is suffering from a skin condition.

In order to keep your fur baby health inspect your Pug's skin regularly and learn more about Pug skin conditions on sites like PugSpot. Also look for scabs, redness or swelling and if you see any of these things consult with your vet on how you can help your pooch get better.

If you keep your Pug's skin clean and clean out his wrinkles regularly he should be fine, but also be aware that household chemicals, dust, or even your Pug's food can be contributing to his skin issues as well.

  1. My pug is 9 years old and has always had skin problems. Now she is better. I give her 1/4 spoon a day of Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil. Skin is great! Feed her Blue Buffalo Basics for small breed and Blue Buffalo treats. NO PEOPLE FOOD! Bathe her once a week with medicated shampoo from vets office. Finally much better‼️ also remove carpeting!

  2. We tried everything and our Puggy is allegic to fish. So fish oil is out but our vet gave us epaquil and he is better. No ear fungus no skin rashes and no paw licking. Wish we had this years ago. But you do have to give him a pro biotic with the meds.
